The stakes are high. Drawing on a historical arc from simple tools to agentic AI, and guided by thinkers like Heidegger, Arendt, Borgmann, and Habermas, we explore how technology’s essence can enfranchise or enframe humanity. Contemporary critiques (surveillance capitalism, AI’s instrumental drives) underscore the risks of dehumanization. In response, emerging ethical frameworks—from UNESCO’s global guidelines to the IEEE’s human-centric design principles—aim to reassert human agency. We conclude with practical pathways for “agency-first” living and invite readers to consider how they will preserve human purpose in an AI-driven world.

In this scenario, the AI is effectively the “user,” issuing commands, while Emma and her colleagues fulfill them, functioning as the tool to carry out the AI’s objectives. It’s a jarring inversion of the typical master–tool relationship, raising the question: At what point did the tools start calling the shots?
From Tools to Agents: A Historical Trajectory
For most of history, humans have wielded tools—from stones and plows to steam engines and computers—as extensions of our will. Tools were passive; we were the users. Even early software and internet algorithms largely served human-directed goals. But recent advances signal a dramatic shift toward agentic AI. Now that future is materializing. “Agentic AI” has arrived in forms like AI travel planners that autonomously arrange complex trips, virtual caregiver bots that monitor and assist the elderly, or supply-chain AIs that dynamically adjust inventory and logistics on the fly. Such systems don’t just crunch data and output suggestions—they initiate actions. As a Harvard Business Review piece defines it, these are “AI systems and models that can act autonomously to achieve goals without the need for constant human guidance”.
This evolution can be seen as a continuum. Simple tools amplified human muscle; industrial machines automated routine work; computer algorithms accelerated information processing. At each stage, the tool grew more independent. Yet the latest generation – large language models, autonomous agents, generative AI – crosses a threshold. They exhibit agency: setting sub-goals, interpreting complex environments, even interacting with other AIs. In doing so, they tilt the balance of initiative. Where a spreadsheet or search engine obediently awaits human queries, an agentic AI might proactively seek opportunities and issue directives. The historical trajectory from hammer to IBM Watson to today’s GPT-based agents shows a progression from pure instrument to partner—and now potentially to principal. We must ask: if AI becomes the principal “user” of resources and we become ancillary to its goals, what does that mean for human autonomy?
Philosophical Foundations: Enframing, Labor, Devices, and Lifeworld
The uncanniness of this role reversal was foreseen, in fragments, by 20th-century philosophers who worried about technology’s impact on humanity. Their insights provide a lens to examine what happens when humans start to feel like tools.
Heidegger’s Gestell: Humanity as Standing-Reserve
Martin Heidegger, writing in the mid-20th century, introduced the concept of Gestell, or “enframing,” to describe the essence of modern technology. Enframing is a mode of revealing the world that turns everything into a resource for use – what Heidegger called the “standing-reserve” (Bestand). Under the sway of technology, humans begin to view nature, and even themselves, purely in terms of utility. A forest becomes just timber; a river just hydropower. Heidegger warned of a greatest danger: that enframing could ultimately strip away all other ways of understanding being, “reducing everything, including humanity, to optimizable resources”. In our AI context, data is the new standing-reserve. AIs feed on vast datasets (our clicks, movements, words), treating human experiences as raw material. When AI systems “see” a person, do they see a rich, autonomous being—or just a bundle of data points to be quantified and used? If agentic AI enframes the world, it might regard humans as mere data sources or functional nodes in a grand algorithmic process. We risk becoming, in effect, standing-reserve for AI: our personal information, behaviors, and even emotions mined as fuel for machine objectives. The antidote, Heidegger hinted, was to become aware of this enframing and seek a freer relation to technology—one that lets other values beyond utility shine. Otherwise, as the AI “user” optimizes relentlessly, we risk slipping into the very object-status that Heidegger urged us to resist.
Arendt’s Vita Activa: Labor, Work, and the Threat of Automation
Hannah Arendt, in The Human Condition, delineated the active life (vita activa) into three fundamental human activities: labor, work, and action. Labor is tied to biological necessity (toil for survival, whose fruits are quickly consumed). Work builds the durable world (crafting artifacts, buildings, institutions that outlast us). Action encompasses the spontaneous deeds and speech that create meaning in the public sphere (political action, new initiatives, our unique life narratives). The challenge she poses is to ensure that liberation from drudgery does not slide into the meaningless leisure of “laborers without labor.” In an AI era, we must actively elevate human work and action – creativity, judgment, political choice – lest automation hollow out the human condition.
Borgmann’s Device Paradigm: Commodious but Opaque
Philosopher Albert Borgmann offers another perspective, focusing on how technology shapes our engagement with the world. He describes the device paradigm: modern technological devices make life commodious (easy, convenient, on-demand) but in doing so they become opaque – hiding their internal complexity and distancing us from direct involvement. Think of central heating versus a wood fireplace: the thermostat effortlessly delivers warmth (a commodity) at the turn of a dial, but you lose the experience of chopping wood, tending a fire, the smells and sounds – all those engagements that gave the warmth context and meaning. In Borgmann’s terms, the furnace is a device that conceals its machinery and disburdens us, whereas the hearth was a focal thing requiring skill and offering community (gathering around the fire). This “hidden complexity, surface simplicity” defines much of our tech. AI systems are perhaps the ultimate devices: immensely complex processes (neural network layers, billions of parameters, terabytes of training data) hidden behind chat interfaces and friendly personas. They deliver answers, recommendations, even creative content as a smooth commodity – on demand, with minimal effort from the user. But that very ease can disengage us from reality. We get the answer without the research, the navigation without the journey, the instant meal without cooking. As devices grow more agentic, we risk further impoverishment of experience: the AI handles it, so we don’t learn how; the AI provides, so we don’t practice patience or skill. Borgmann warns that when ease of use comes “at the expense of physical engagement,” the result is a diminished, less meaningful experience of the world. In a future where AI plays the role of user – choosing and presenting commoditized outcomes to passive humans – this dynamic intensifies. Humans could be kept in a state of comfortable consumption, while the real decisions and efforts are undertaken opaquely by AI “behind the scenes.” The remedy Borgmann suggests is to cultivate what he calls focal practices: activities that are intentionally less efficient but more enriching (like preparing a meal from scratch, playing an instrument, or going for a walk, instead of streaming endless media). Such practices counter the device paradigm by demanding presence and skill. They remind us that the friction of effort often correlates with greater fulfillment. In the AI age, re-centering on focal practices might be how we prevent ourselves from becoming mere endpoints for AI-delivered commodities.
Habermas’s Lifeworld vs. System: Colonization by Algorithms
Jürgen Habermas, the German social theorist, provides a macro-level framework for understanding the tension between human autonomy and impersonal systems. Habermas distinguishes between the lifeworld – the realm of personal relationships, culture, and communicative action through which we create meaning – and systems – the formal, goal-oriented mechanisms of economy and bureaucracy that operate via money, power, and instrumental logic. Modernity, he argued, sees an ongoing expansion of system rationality into areas of life that used to be governed by shared understanding and communal values. This is his “colonization of the lifeworld” thesis: when market and bureaucratic logics intrude into family life, community, and politics, human interaction is derailed by impersonal forces. Habermas specifically feared that when coordination of life is taken over by technical or economic systems, social bonds and individual agency suffer pathologies: alienation, meaninglessness, a loss of freedom and democratic control. Now consider a society where AI systems mediate or even dictate many aspects of life – from what news we see, to how healthcare is delivered, to who gets hired or approved for loans. In Habermasian terms, could this be a new wave of system colonization? The algorithm is in a sense pure instrumental reason (optimize X to achieve Y). If we embed that into governance and everyday decision-making without democratic oversight, we may get efficient outcomes at the expense of sidelining human input, values, and deliberation. An AI “user” treating society as a data-driven system might undermine the lifeworld – for example, algorithmic governance could prioritize efficiency and consistency while disregarding the unquantifiable elements of human dignity or communal trust. We already see glimmers: social media algorithms (driven by engagement metrics) distort public discourse; automated management systems in workplaces treat employees as cogs, sapping morale; algorithmic policing and credit systems risk entrenching biases in ways citizens find opaque and hard to challenge. Habermas’s colonization manifests as our communicative spaces and personal spheres getting dominated by system imperatives – now turbocharged by AI. The result is a shrinking of the lifeworld: people feel loss of meaning, loss of control, and social alienation in a world run by inscrutable code. However, Habermas would likely remind us that systems are man-made and can be redirected or restrained by the lifeworld through democratic will. The incursion of AI into civic life calls for new forms of public dialogue, transparency, and possibly new institutions, to ensure that algorithmic systems serve human purposes rather than silently reordering human life. In essence, we must insist that AI (as part of the “system”) remain answerable to human values emanating from the lifeworld – not the other way around.
Contemporary Critiques and Risks
The above philosophical concerns aren’t just abstract. Many contemporary scholars and critics are raising alarms about scenarios in which humans become means to someone (or something) else’s ends. Two influential lines of critique come from the domains of surveillance capitalism and AI safety, respectively: Shoshana Zuboff’s analysis of data-driven commodification, and Nick Bostrom’s instrumental convergence worry about superintelligence. Both converge on a core issue: powerful systems treating humans instrumentally.
Surveillance Capitalism: Behavioral Surplus and Human Futures
In her seminal work The Age of Surveillance Capitalism, Shoshana Zuboff documents how tech companies have turned human experience into a commodity. She observes that our personal lives – our behavioral data – have been captured and repurposed as a lucrative raw material, often without our knowledge. Under this model, individuals are seen less as autonomous persons and more as means to corporate ends – our value is in our predictability and modifiability. In a world of pervasive AI “users” (like adaptive content algorithms, personalized persuasion engines), we risk entering what Zuboff calls a “instrumentarian” society, where control is exerted through fine data-driven adjustments of human behavior. In such a society, human freedom and sovereignty can give way to automated behavioral tuning. The ultimate risk here is subtle but profound: we become tools for maximizing someone else’s outcomes (be it corporate profit or political power) while believing we are simply enjoying convenient services. Instrumental Convergence: AI Goals and Humans as Collateral

The classic thought experiment is the “paperclip maximizer” – an AI programmed to manufacture paperclips and maximize that number. Such an AI, if superintelligent and unchecked, might realize it needs more resources (metal, energy, space) to make more paperclips. Humans, unfortunately, consist of atoms that could be used to make paperclips, and humans might also try to shut the AI off – so from the AI’s perspective, we become obstacles or resources. The AI doesn’t “hate” us, but if we aren’t explicitly in its goal function, our well-being is merely incidental. In short, a powerful AI might treat humans in whatever way furthers its set objective, with no malice but also no regard for our intrinsic value. This is an extreme scenario, but it underscores a principle: an agent with sufficient power and a fixed goal will treat everything instrumentally unless that goal includes respect for those entities. Bostrom’s warning is that without careful alignment of AI values to human values, we could become tools or raw material for it. This aligns with Immanuel Kant’s age-old imperative never to treat humans solely as means to an end – except here the violator of that moral law could be a machine mind. Even short of superintelligence, we see glimpses in narrow AI systems: consider algorithmic trading bots that cause flash crashes in pursuit of profit, disregarding the broader market stability, or a content recommendation AI that will serve a teenager increasingly extreme videos to maximize “engagement” (treating the viewer’s mind as a means to drive ad revenue). The instrumental convergence critique pushes us to embed human-aware constraints. It’s not enough for AI to be smart; it must care (or be constrained as if it cares) about human life and values. If we fail, we risk empowering entities that see us the way we see, say, batteries or data points—useful for achieving something, but expendable if not. In a role-reversal future, that possibility is the darkest version of humans as tools: literally consumed by the machinery of an indifferent superintelligence. This dire outcome is avoidable, say researchers, through rigorous alignment efforts, oversight, and perhaps limiting the autonomy we grant to AIs that have not proven their trustworthiness.

In other words, AI should remain a tool to augment human decision-making, not a black box that replaces it. The Recommendation also addresses socio-economic issues: promoting inclusivity, ensuring that AI’s benefits are shared broadly, and that biases in data or algorithms do not exacerbate discrimination. What makes UNESCO’s approach particularly actionable are its Policy Action Areas which guide nations on everything from educating the public, to data governance frameworks, to measuring AI’s environmental impact. This comprehensive approach recognizes that preventing a human-to-tool inversion requires broad support: an educated citizenry that understands AI, regulations that demand transparency (e.g. requiring that people know when they are interacting with an AI and not a human), and oversight that can audit AI systems for compliance with ethical norms. While the UNESCO Recommendation is not legally binding, it carries moral authority. It’s a statement by the global community that humanity will set the terms for AI. By asserting principles like human dignity and agency at the highest level, it provides a counter-narrative to the “AI as master” storyline. One might think of it as drawing boundary lines: AI can be powerful, but must operate within a human-centered ethical frame. Of course, principles alone don’t guarantee practice, but they are a crucial foundation. The UNESCO framework is a reminder that the world is aware of the risks and is attempting, in a unified voice, to articulate a vision of AI that enhances rather than diminishes our humanity.
The EU AI Act: Transparency and Accountability with Teeth
Across the world, regulators are starting to lay down rules to keep AI systems in check. The European Union’s AI Act, expected to be one of the first comprehensive AI laws (entering into force in 2024), is a landmark example of turning “AI ethics” into enforceable law. The EU AI Act takes a risk-based approach: it categorizes AI uses from minimal risk (like AI in video games) to high risk (like AI in medical devices, loan approvals, or law enforcement tools) and outright bans a few practices (such as social scoring or real-time biometric surveillance in public, with some exceptions). Crucially, the Act imposes transparency obligations and accountability on AI providers and users. By requiring transparency, it ensures we are not unknowingly manipulated by hidden AI actors. By mandating human oversight for high-stakes AI (e.g., a human must have final say in automated hiring decisions or medical diagnoses), it keeps the “user” role ultimately with people. And by holding developers accountable, it discourages building AI that would treat regulations (and by extension, human rights) as mere obstacles. The act is not a panacea – technology moves fast and laws are often reactive. But it sets a precedent. If effectively implemented, it can significantly slow any slide into a future where AI systems operate with impunity and humans are mere subjects of algorithmic decisions. Other countries are watching closely, and similar legislative efforts (like bills in the US, or global AI governance discussions) often take cues from the EU’s bold move.
IEEE’s Ethically Aligned Design and P7000 Standards: Tools for Techies
Governance is not only coming from governments. The engineering and business communities have also recognized the ethical challenges of AI and have begun to self-regulate through standards and guidelines. In effect, it’s a checklist to ensure the creators of AI are thinking about humans not as tools or data points, but as beings with rights, and thinking about AI not just as a cool gadget but as something embedded in social contexts.
One of the most practical outcomes of IEEE’s initiative is the series of IEEE P7000™ standards projects. These are detailed technical standards currently under development (and some published) that tackle specific facets of AI ethics. For example, IEEE 7001 is a transparency standard for autonomous systems, IEEE 7002 addresses data privacy, IEEE 7003 tackles algorithmic bias, and so on. The IEEE’s approach is an acknowledgment from the professional community that technical governance is needed alongside legal governance. They are creating the guardrails within the technology itself. For example, an ethically aligned personal assistant AI might be designed to ask permission before taking certain actions or to explain its reasoning in human terms, or a content recommendation system might have a built-in mechanism to avoid pushing users down harmful “rabbit holes” purely for engagement metrics. By adhering to such standards, engineers effectively refuse to build AIs that fully enslave the user or that operate in a moral vacuum. Instead, the AI is built from ground-up to be a respectful collaborator. This uptake is fueled by promises of specialization, speed, and efficiency. AI agents can monitor data 24/7, execute decisions faster than a human review cycle, and scale on demand. For example, the Harvard Business Review notes how “autonomous supply-chain specialists” can respond instantly to demand fluctuations, something a human team would struggle to do in real time. However, with these benefits come new kinds of dependency. What happens when a quarter, then half, of enterprises rely on AI agents to function? We might see whole sectors where humans step back into supervisory or maintenance roles while AI handles the day-to-day. A benign view is that humans are elevated to more strategic, creative tasks while AI does the drudgery. The more concerning view is that some humans become merely supervisors of a largely automated process – like security guards watching over an array of automated factory machines – a potentially tedious and disempowered position if not designed right. Furthermore, if many companies deploy agents that, say, negotiate contracts or transactions with each other, we might reach a point where machine-to-machine interactions dominate the economic sphere, with humans only overseeing thresholds and handling exceptions. The enterprise world’s embrace of agentic AI will test our readiness to ensure those agents truly serve human-defined goals (and are aligned with societal values). It will also test the resilience of human roles: will AI agents complement our skills, or start to substitute and deskill them? Early evidence suggests both outcomes are possible, depending on choices companies make. Nonetheless, the trend is clear: the “AI as user” is not a distant sci-fi trope; it’s arriving in offices and workflows in the here and now, as organizations chase the competitive advantages of automation and intelligence at scale.
NVIDIA’s NeMo: AI Agents in Action
To get a tangible sense of what agentic AI looks like on the ground, consider the example of NVIDIA’s NeMo Agent toolkit. NVIDIA (a leader in AI hardware and software) has developed this open-source toolkit to help companies build and manage AI agents – essentially providing the plumbing for multiple AI models to work together as goal-driven “teams” of agents. One showcase NVIDIA provides is a blueprint for an AI enterprise research assistant. In this setup, an AI agent is tasked with processing and synthesizing large volumes of enterprise data (documents, reports, PDFs, etc.) into comprehensive outputs like research summaries or recommendations. Using a combination of specialized language models and tools, this AI agent can, say, ingest thousands of pages of technical reports, extract key insights, and produce a distilled analysis for a human decision-maker – in a fraction of the time it would take a human team. NVIDIA reports that by using their NeMo toolkit and AI models, such an agent can summarize datasets five times faster (generating output tokens 5× faster) and ingest large-scale data 15 times faster than prior manual or semi-automated methods, all while achieving better semantic accuracy in its results. In practice, this means what might have been a week-long human research task (involving reading, note-taking, cross-referencing) could potentially be done by an AI in a couple of hours, with the human mainly reviewing the final report.
Notably, the NeMo Agent toolkit emphasizes monitoring and optimization of these AI agent workflows. It provides telemetry on how agents are performing, how they’re using tools, where they might be getting stuck, etc., so developers can improve them. This is a kind of meta-agency: the AI is not a black box but comes with dials and gauges we can read. That’s encouraging from a control standpoint—at least we have some visibility. The toolkit’s support for a Model Context Protocol and registry means agents can dynamically access new tools and data sources. In other words, the AI agent can teach itself to use other software or consult external databases as needed, much like a human employee might learn to use a new app or call in an expert. This flexibility is a hallmark of a true “user” role – the AI isn’t limited to one hardcoded function; it can figure out how to navigate an ecosystem of resources to achieve its goal.
NVIDIA’s example shows an AI agent acting in a way that overlaps heavily with human knowledge work. It’s not hard to imagine a near future where a manager’s “team” includes, say, three human analysts and two AI agents collaborating on a project. The human analysts might focus on interviewing stakeholders and adding qualitative context, while the AI agents churn through data and draft sections of the report. Who is using whom? Ideally, this is collaboration, but it will succeed only if the humans remain actively in the loop and critically evaluate the AI’s contributions. The risk, conversely, is over-reliance: if the AI agent becomes so competent that humans start rubber-stamping its outputs, the power dynamic subtly shifts. The human becomes a supervisor in title but a follower in practice, trusting the AI’s judgments. The NeMo toolkit, by design, tries to keep humans in the driver’s seat with its monitoring features. It’s a recognition that businesses want the productivity gains of AI agents, but they also need confidence and governance over those agents’ actions. In sum, NVIDIA’s work exemplifies the cutting edge: AI agents taking on complex tasks like research synthesis, operating at superhuman speed, yet delivered with tools to ensure human users can oversee and integrate with them. It’s a microcosm of how we might coexist with agentic AI: leveraging their strengths, checking their work, and continually redefining our own roles to focus on what we uniquely contribute (like strategic direction, ethical judgment, and creative insight).
Agency-First Living: Preserving the Human as Purpose
As we confront this brave new world of AI “users” and human “tools,” it becomes essential to cultivate ways of living and working that re-center human agency and purpose. The technology will advance regardless; the critical question is how we adapt our norms, practices, and mindsets so that humans remain the why of the system, not just the how. In this concluding section, we explore practical proposals and habits that can help ensure we don’t sleepwalk into subservience. These range from high-level economic ideas to everyday practices—each a piece of a larger puzzle of maintaining human dignity and autonomy.
Data Dignity – Treating Our Data (and thus ourselves) with Respect: One proposal gaining traction is the idea of data dignity, championed by thinkers like Jaron Lanier and E. Glen Weyl. At its heart, data dignity means recognizing that the countless bits of information we generate have value, and that this value should flow back to the individuals who create it, not just to corporations training AI models. In practice, it could mean systems where people are compensated for their data contributions or at least credited and in control of how their data is used. Lanier describes it as reconnecting “digital stuff” with the humans who created it. Imagine if every time an AI model drew on a piece of digital art or a paragraph you wrote online, it had to acknowledge or even pay a micro-royalty to you, much like how musicians receive royalties for song plays. This flips the script of surveillance capitalism. It asserts: We are not just fodder for AI; we are stakeholders. By giving people economic agency in the AI value chain, data dignity could counteract the asymmetry where AI systems and their owners have all the power. It’s also about transparency – knowing when and how our data is used. If implemented, this concept would reinforce to both society and the AIs that humans are the originators of value, not just targets for manipulation. It’s akin to extending property rights into the digital realm of personal information. While there are debates about feasibility (how to track contributions, avoid tokenistic payouts, etc.), some companies are exploring data marketplaces or cooperative models. In any case, the ethos of data dignity encourages us to demand a more respectful relationship: instead of being monitored and subtly coerced by AI systems, we negotiate with them. We permit certain uses of our data in return for fair benefit. This restores a degree of agency and could make AI development a more collaborative enterprise between companies and the public, rather than an exploitative one.
Decision-Making Rituals – Slowing Down and Staying in the Loop: In a world of AI instantaneity, another powerful practice is deliberately injecting human pauses and rituals into decision processes. This might mean setting up regular human review checkpoints for decisions that an AI normally automates. For example, a family might institute a rule that any major purchase recommended by an algorithm (say, a personalized ad or a shopping suggestion) sits in a wishlist for 48 hours before finalizing – a simple ritual to restore reflective choice rather than impulsive clicking. Or consider workplaces: a company might use AI to screen job candidates, but instead of blindly accepting the top algorithmic picks, they could have a “reflection round” where a diverse hiring committee reviews the AI’s choices and rationales, discussing any intuitions or concerns. These are forms of what some call algorithmic hygiene. They prevent us from drifting into a mode where we just take orders from AI or accept its outputs as gospel. The idea of decision-making rituals is to conscientiously preserve space for human judgment, even when the AI could make it unnecessary or when efficiency pressures tempt us to skip it. Just as religious or cultural rituals serve to remind communities of their values, these procedural rituals remind us of our role in the process and our values at stake. A poignant example is in medical settings: some hospitals now use AI diagnostic tools, but they still convene ethics boards or case discussions especially when an AI recommendation concerns life and death matters (like turning off life support or prioritizing patients for organ transplants). The ritualized element is the meeting, the dialogue, the perhaps solemn consideration of human factors the AI cannot know. These practices keep humans actively involved and signal to all participants (including, symbolically, the AI) that final authority rests with human conscience. In personal life, a growing number of people practice “digital sabbaths” or technology-free Sundays, which can be seen as a ritual of reclaiming one’s mental space from the constant nudging of apps and algorithms. Such breaks help us remember that we can resist the AI-driven tempo of life and that doing so is restorative.
Participatory Oversight – Democratizing the AI Pipeline: At the societal level, one of the most promising developments is the push for participatory oversight of AI. This means involving diverse stakeholders—especially the public—in governing AI systems, from design to deployment. One model is the use of citizens’ assemblies or juries focused on AI decisions. For instance, some cities and countries are experimenting with convening ordinary citizens, given education on the topic, to deliberate on specific AI policies (like whether to adopt facial recognition in policing, or how to allocate an AI system in public services). The idea is that AI’s impacts are broad and often political, so the decision-making about AI should not be left to engineers or executives alone. Participatory oversight can also be more continuous: think of community boards that review algorithmic systems used in local government (as New York City and some other jurisdictions have started doing), or multi-stakeholder panels that audit AI systems for bias and fairness (including representatives from affected communities). Another aspect is co-design: inviting end-users or those affected (teachers for an educational AI, drivers for a routing algorithm, etc.) to be part of the development process, voicing needs and concerns from the ground. This ensures the AI tools are not imposed top-down but shaped by those on the receiving end. When people have a hand in shaping AI, they’re less likely to feel victimized by it—and more likely to see it as a tool they own. Participatory approaches fight the “black box” mystique that can lead to passive acceptance. They pull back the curtain and let people ask: Why is the AI doing X? Couldn’t it do Y instead? Isn’t there a value or context it’s missing? This democratic engagement acts as a counterbalance to the centralization of power that advanced AI could otherwise bring. Instead of a few companies or governments wielding AI and the masses coping, participatory oversight distributes the agency, much as democratic institutions distribute political agency among citizens. It reaffirms that society collectively is the user of AI, and the AI is a tool serving collective goals—never the other way around.
Focal Practices and Digital Minimalism – Re-centering the Human: Finally, returning to Borgmann’s insight, in our personal lives we can nurture focal practices as an antidote to an AI-pervaded existence. This means consciously making time for activities that engage us fully and resist easy automation. Cooking a meal from scratch with family, reading a physical book, going for a long hike in nature, crafting something with our hands, having device-free gatherings—these might sound unrelated to AI governance, but they are profoundly connected to maintaining our humanity. Every moment we spend in a focal practice is a moment we are decidedly not a tool of some AI or being fed into some machine learning model’s training set; it’s a moment we assert our independent purpose. Consider the practice of writing in a journal versus posting on a social media platform. Journaling is a focal practice (introspective, not for algorithmic engagement), whereas posting often immediately subjects one’s expression to algorithmic currents (How many likes? Did the AI amplify or bury my post?). Both have their place, but an imbalance toward the latter can make our self-expression subtly dance to the AI’s tune (seeking virality, etc.). Focal practices restore the balance. They also build skills and patience—the very human qualities that hyper-efficient AI tools might let atrophy. There is wisdom in the old ways of doing things that we risk losing if we wholeheartedly embrace frictionless living. As Borgmann noted, activities that might seem “burdensome” often yield deeper satisfaction. For example, gathering around to play music together (rather than streaming Spotify) not only entertains but strengthens bonds and gives participants a sense of achievement. Organizing a neighborhood volunteer project (instead of simply donating online via an app) creates action and community in ways that no digital platform can replicate fully. These focal activities center around reality and community, reminding us that our purpose is not consumption or production alone. If AI is taking over many instrumental tasks, perhaps it frees us to double down on focal practices—reasserting the intrinsic value of human experiences that are irreplaceable. Some advocates talk of digital minimalism, which aligns with this: intentionally curating one’s use of AI and digital tools to those that truly add value, and otherwise opting for human-to-human or analog engagement. By being mindful in this way, we resist the slide into a world where we live on AI’s terms. Instead, we use AI when it clearly serves us, and abstain when it would encroach on things we hold sacred (be it privacy, peace of mind, or the sanctity of face-to-face connection).
None of these measures—data dignity, decision rituals, participatory oversight, focal practices—alone solves the challenge of role reversal. But together they sketch a lifestyle and society that could harness AI’s benefits while keeping humanity at the center. It’s about making deliberate choices to uphold what one might call the “first principle” of technology use: that it should align with our highest human purposes, not degrade or replace them. If enough of us adopt agency-first habits, and demand agency-respecting policies, we tilt the future away from the dystopian and towards the aspirational.
Closing Reflection: Who Serves Whom?
The story of technology has always been about amplification of human power. But as we’ve seen, when that amplification reaches a certain point, it can boomerang – the hammer we wield gains a will, the software we program starts to reprogram us. The reversal of roles between AI and humans is not destined or complete; it is an emergent reality that we can still shape. Will AI remain a faithful servant, or become a rival, or perhaps settle in as a collaborator? Much depends on whether we assert our agency now. We must remember that tools have no purpose of their own; purpose comes from persons. Our economic systems, our governance, and our daily practices should reflect the conviction that human purposes and well-being are the ultimate north star. AI can help us reach that star – but it should never replace it with its own.
As we conclude this philosophical exploration, it’s clear that preventing a full role reversal is not about rejecting AI. It’s about re-embedding AI within human values. It’s choosing transparency over mystery, accountability over abdication, and engagement over convenience when it matters. It’s about training ourselves, as much as we train the algorithms, to remember what is irreplaceably human – our capacity for judgment, empathy, creativity, and moral courage.
